Challenge

Mecon Insurance develops and provides specialised insurance products through insurance brokers to deliver tailored solutions for a wide range of clients and industries. They provide insurance for risks throughout Australia and New Zealand, as well as overseas operations for locally-based clients.

In 2018, Mecon chose to develop a new portfolio of insurance products and, at the same time, revitalise the tools that their broker’s used to do business with them, however Mecon used an existing industry solution to design their products and manage their back-office operations.

Mecon engaged Thinking.Studio to help them reimagine their broker experience while integrating seamlessly with their existing back office technology.

Solution

Thinking.Studio team worked with the client and back-office software vendor to design a solution that would surpass any other broker platform for performance, efficiency and simplicity - and Thinking.Studio developed a solution based on a completely open-source implementation stack of Angular and Act.Framework (Java).

As part of the Thinking.Studio delivery process, a series of agile design sprints were undertaken and a detailed user interface prototype was developed and tested with different broker groups. Once the design was approved, the portal was then developed over several Agile sprints using the Thinking.Studio Scrum methodology.

As the development was undertaken, an environment on Amazon Web Services was configured with SSL and a production NGINX web-server that proxies to the Act.Framework application and MongoDB database. This server side code would act as middle-ware between the legacy back-office application and the modern broker portal - providing high performance caching and modern web-application security, while keeping the back-office systems isolated.

The code was added to the Thinking.Studio Jenkin’s continuous deployment pipeline. As code is tagged in GIT for acceptance testing or release, it was then built, tested, and deployed into the appropriate AWS environments.

Results

Mecon now has an industry leading portal solution with brokers actively moving to Mecon for the ease of use and efficiency gains.

Broker Software Redesign

Challenge

When our client acquired a key player in the broker back-office management space, they made that acquisition knowing that the system was perceived as complex by its users and it required a substantial investment in user training - but they have a strong internal software-engineering capability and intended to redevelop the front-end of the application once the acquisition was completed.

Solution

Thinking.Studio team worked with the client and software engineering team to redesign the user experience, information architecture and user interface design of the back-office application.

We undertook a Design Thinking process, where consultants sat with brokers and their administrative teams, undertook interviews and performed industry research to reimagine the experience.

The consulting team built an information architecture and then designed interactive prototypes of a future-state that were then tested with the different stakeholders.

Once the prototypes were refined, the Thinking.Studio consultants worked with the client's software engineers to demonstrate how they could most effectively integrate the existing back-end functionality into the new user-interfaces.

Results

After unveiling the redesigned broking system at its annual convention, there was a huge amount of interest and strong uptake in the platform.

CEO presented the system saying “It’s exactly what the network wanted,” - “It’s the Google of insurance broking systems.”

The transformation has gone on measurably improve broker productivity, while also reducing their training and support costs.

Insurance Coverage Portal

Our client is a software company that is the industry leader in their segment, however, their software has primarily been designed for running a financial planning practise - Thinking.Studio was engaged to design and prototype compelling consumer facing portals for their sofware.

Solution

Thinking.Studio worked with their team to design and prototype their new portal solution.

By working with stakeholders, performing research, and going through a Design Thinking iterative process, a fully interactive prototype was designed and developed to guide the engineering team for implementation.
